What are molds?

Mold or mildew, also sometimes called fungus, is anaerobic bacteria that grows on damp indoor surfaces. They have been around for millions of years. While its existence has been widely known, few people actually know how it reproduces. Molds grow on dead organic materials like wood, paper, textiles and some minerals. They usually cause no harm unless they are present in an enclosed space or in large amounts.

Mold is an essential part of our ecosystem and plays an active role in nature by breaking down deceased organic material including fallen trees and dead leaves; however, moldy areas should be properly disinfected before cleaning or disinfecting is used. Typically, mold remediation companies use standard commercial disinfectants or strong household cleaners. These can be effective, but they can be harmful to humans and animals and can cause serious health impacts. Therefore, before handling moldy materials, you should wear protective gear and gloves.

Where can molds be found?

When there is moisture present in any space, molds grow very quickly. There are many different types of molds. Some grow only as they need moisture to survive, while others grow just because they are present and cannot grow without it. Mold species can range from the common houseplant, Alliums, to fungi that can grow on metal and ceramic materials. The type of mold that you have on your hands is only as good as the amount of moisture in the area.

Moisture is an issue not just with molds but with all kinds of moisture. If there are areas like bathrooms and kitchens which are always open, especially in the summer, molds will grow very quickly. These moist areas like bathrooms and kitchens are where people usually spend a lot of time. Other places like warehouses and storage areas like garages also have a high moisture content.

Causes Mold Problems

Types of Molds

Formica is known by the name fiberglass. It is usually found on walls and ceilings. This type of mold is formed when fiberglass sheets are poured over mortar or base material. The molds grow on this material and leave a fine coating of fiberglass behind. This coating makes it easy for air to circulate and makes the room temperature warmer.\

Stachybotrys is also known as mold that reproduces in moist environments. It reproduces rapidly and does not shrink or die. These molds can grow on metal, wood, concrete and nonferrous metals. When found in buildings they are usually discolored and look like tiny black dots.

Penicilium molds that are shaped like a grain. This mold reproduces slowly and has a fine, crumbly texture. It is commonly found in gyms and baseball diamonds. This mold is also mixed with cement and placed under shoes to absorb moisture, which prevents the shoes from getting wet.

Dyscoprase is an example of a greenish black mold. It is similar to Penicilium, but it is more grayish black in color. It is commonly found in damp areas of businesses such as heating and cooling systems. This type of mold is best removed when the location is dried out completely.

Alternaria is known as a hardy mold that is found on concrete, stone and other surfaces. It reproduces very slowly and is known for surviving for a long time. The most common way these molds are found is by breaking down concrete. They are often mixed with cement and place under walkways. When the area is completely dry, this type of mold will fall off of its surface.
